My woes with HP TX1000 / TX1320US series laptop

by Diary | March 11th, 2009

I was a big fan of HP earlier, but now I am not.

Let me share my personal experience with HP, their lousy and low quality product.

I purchased an HP TX1320US (Turion 64 X2 TL-60 2GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD, Vista Home Premium) tablet PC last year from JLR, NYC. At the time of purchase I was in two minds; whether to buy Apple Macintosh or HP TX 1000 series. Due to convincing selling of JLR rep, I decided to buy HP TX 1320 US.

It has been working fine for about an year. Thought it was a good decision and I have partnered with a good company. However the laptop died within 13 months. Just imagine, exactly 1 month after warranty expiration the laptop died.

I faced following problems with the HP TX1320US laptop:

  • Overheat, at times temperature rising more than 90 degree
  • wireless card not working
  • Failure to boot ( LED glows blue except the mute and wifi buttons LED they glow orange, and on the screen nothing comes even the boot time HP logo is also not coming.)
  • I complaint to HP and wrote emails to various people within HP to get my laptop repaired. Well writing to CEO of HP had some impact. I was contacted by HP and the laptop was repaired for free.

Though the laptop worked well for about two months, but it again showed signs of the same problem and last week it died completely. I am really at loss of words now.

This time I am feeling really helpless and looking for a permanent solution to my problem. My experience with HP is disastrous and its really unacceptable to have this kind of problem on a 1 year-old computer. Interestingly, HP does not acknowledge this problem and apparently they are not planning any recalls on this defective product.

Request you to please sign our petition asking HP to recall this defective laptop.

    1. I had this laptop over year, and it is overheating. It overheats after 5 minutes. So I bought a laptop cooler and even that doesn’t help. So I have another small Super fan pointed towards my keyboard to keep it cool. This is ridiculous, people should call HP or at least send some e-mails so that there would be a recall or something or at least that they will be more aware of this problem.

    2. Will never buy another HP again …. ever …. never! Same issues as many have had with wireless, etc. Also had mother board replaced, USB connectors always quit working (now again), DVD drive bad (twice and is again), Ethernet replaced, needs to be again.

Came back from HP with deep scratches on lid, MADE them replace it, second laptop they did this to and the first the they never replaced … after nearly 2 1/2 months of sending it in again and again got fed up and just kept it the way it was. HP is the bane of my existence.

Tech support from HP when talking to someone overseas is sooooooooooooo frustrating because they only read what they are given. I have worked with computers for over 20 years. Give me credit to try everything they demand I step through again nad again (every time the a new tech changes). Worse piece of c*&% laptop I ever purchased. Even if they gave me one I would not take it …. well, maybe I would to destroy it and make the world a better place for all laptops.

Think I sound angry? Only when thinking about HP and this horrible laptop.

    3. Dennis Nicolas says:

i have exact problem i have HP pavillion TX200 and i just finish my warranty and it happen like everyone else i just lost my wifi i dont know why i didn’t erase anything,HP should do something with all the problem that happening in HP,all the customer out there they thought that HP is good quality!

    4. I purchased HP Tx 1000 two years back. In first 6 months I faced problem with battery which HP replaced as it was in warranty. After about 15 months of purchase wireless adapter stopped working and soon after that motherboard went dead. I can’t do anything with the laptop as replacement motherboard costs hefty 400 USD and even after that there’s no gurantee that it will work and for how long. Its better that HP recalls motherboard which has defective motherboard.

    5. 1. wireless adapter–My wireless adapter died summer 2009, after 1 1/2 years. Replacing the adapter did not help. Motherboard has stopped recognizing the wireless adapter. Now I use an external.
      2. hot enough to cook an egg–Computer and the box on the power cord are always hotter than hot! I elevate the computer to keep it from overheating and shutting down. It has overheated and shut down twice. I understand that running hot is characteristic to AMD, though, and aside from the shutdowns it hasn’t seemed to affect computer function.
      3. no boot–Booting problem first started feb.2009 and lately (since 11.2009) having more often I have problems booting. Now thinking about buying a new computer; this one seems no longer reliable. Otherwise it’s been a great computer and I dread the thought of parting with it, but i need reliability. One day last month it wouldn’t boot to windows for 24 hours but magically worked the next day. Since then boot has been iffy, but once it does boot, computer works fine.
      4. blue screens and red screens of death–i’ve had 2 blues, one red, all within past 12 months.

    6. My girlfriend’s father bought the tx1320us for himself and one for my girlfriend for Christmas in 2007. We’ve experienced problems with overheating all along to the point it would burn your skin after only seconds of contact.
More recently, the wireless card detected at its own leisure, the computer has been running even HOTTER (despite using the ‘HP recommended setting’), and had been refusing to restart from hibernation AND from a shut down.
On Christmas 2009, the thing died and refused to boot. I paid a computer tech nearly $100 to walk in my door, bet me (before touching it) that it was the motherboard, then open it and confirm his hypothesis.

He said this particular model is known for the motherboard frying and it’d be over $300 to fix it.
After looking on HP’s own site and seeing the hundreds of posts (since September 2008), there is no way the techies at HP believe the horsecrap line that they recite in response to the problem.

In this economy, people can’t afford to be wasting an additional $300+ to fix a faulty machine that was defective from the factory. I am even more sure that HP can’t afford to NOT fix the problem and turn away customers that otherwise spend thousands of dollars. It would cripple them.

I say we boycott HP until they recognize the issue.

    7. i bought hp tx1320us last january of 2008 but it had shown problem early last year and finally died in the middle of 2009. i hope hp would recall this line of product or offer permanent solution.

    8. I own a tx1000us, Wifi is dead in the water, Im a Computer Support tech degree’e and multiple certs, the card/boards are junk/bad. I work for geeksquad and have seen 100’s of these come through my hands to be sent to service just to be returned unfixed, this recall should have been done 2 years ago, and HP keeping us waiting is bullshit. Hp should refund everyone’s money for selling lemons or make better and fix our tablet pc’s for free since we paid 1000$ for a fing paper weight. Now every time someone wants to buy a HP I RATTLE OFF BAD THINGS ABOUT HP AND MORE TIME THEN NOT, NO ONE BUYS HP’S. Unless HP steps up its Game and recalls these and fixes them, I will continue to stab HP in the face when it comes to someone purchasing their pc’s.

    9. Hassan Ali says:

That is cheating and stealing. I think hp must give us our money back. Once the warrenty is over my labtop stopped working!! and they said they will charge me $400 for it!! even though I have 4 hp computers at home.

    10. David Orman says:

I bought this machine for my appraisal business. After 2 years and one month the wireless card/motherboard is shot, according to my favorite computer shop. I bought this machine to save money by processing appraisals in the field. Now, I’m out $1,200.00.

All my computers and printers have been HP. With all the bad PR about this machine, one would think HP would be more responsive to the customer base –I guess that let’s us know something about HP’s stance on customer loyalty. Fool me once………….

    11. Ryan Stone says:

TX1320US had motherboard replaced twice due to failure of wireless lan. Even buying a USB wireless doesn’t help as the computer doesn’t recognize the wireless period (other usb devices work fine so it is not the USB port). After 2 replacements and reading about everyone else’s experiences I realized this was never going to be resolved in our favor. Just a bad design. I now have switched to a Sony Vaio and am happy so far. My wife had an HP netbook (1030nr) and it has crashed twice on her already in 4 months. Now I have to find another laptop for her…not going to be an HP that is for sure.

    12. Same exact problems. No need to explain again. Fix this!!!!!!!!!!

Wow and here I thought I was the only one experiencing these problems. I bought an HP tx2500 touch notebook a little over a year ago and it has always heated up to extreme temperatures even while not running any programs after just 5 mins. I thought that it was normal cause all the reviews I read said that it runs kinda hot. However having a machine that makes it extremely uncomfortable to type on and almost leaves 1rst degree burns on you if you touch the bottom after 5 mins is absolutely unbearable. I was always going to take it back to HP and have them resolve the issue but I hated the fact that I’d end up waiting forever to get it repaired if there was a problem, that and I needed it for school so I kept putting it off hoping that I could just live with it. I’ve also bought 3 different cooling fans and it has killed each one of them. Unfortunately now it’s been a little over a year and the warranty is up by now so I’m probably completely screwed.
To make matter’s worse I finally had the PC get so hot that no joke it melted half my keyboard into the computer itself, and now my hard drive won’t even recognize as being there….I think it fried it, and probably some other things in there as well. I mean seriously I am surprised I haven’t had it cause a fire…. this pc seriously needs to be recalled, I don’t even think it’s safe to have running for extended periods of time, it’s going to burn down someone’s house. I read online that HP had issued major recalls due to overheating issues in other pc models. Anyone have any suggestions as to what I can maybe do to salvage my laptop. I just bought a new Gateway laptop that runs amazing….and I usually hate Gateway’s for my wife for Christmas and I don’t want to have to buy another one. Yeah I’ll sign your petition!

    14. I also have a big problem with hp 1320us
I bought this laptop and had the blue screen problem during the first year itself . I called hp for many times and I was always told that this is nothing to worry about.
I had a problem with the adapter during the warrenty period and it was replaced by hp. My wireless stopped worked exactly 3 days before the expiry of my warrenty period. And they agreed to repair it for me. But in return I got a worse motherboard and now my laptop stays on for no longer than 30 minutes. It gets shut down within 30 minutes.
They deleted all of my softwares and it was a big mess.
And hp says that now they will repair it for $398 , well they might not know that I can get a better laptop in this price.
I am sure they are not willing to repair it and so they came up with this crazy price.
Now that so many people have problem, it means that this product range itself is defective and they should call for a recall or atleast reapir the problemetic pcs and help stay the customers stay happy

I bought the HP Pavillion tx1000 Notebook July 2007 and just few months after its 2nd year I cannot use it any more, about two weeks ago it just died on me. It comes on if I turn it on but nothing shows on the screen and does not give any sign of booting. I remeber before this time it has been off and on kind of thing. I can’t remember how many times I had to hard reboot to get going. I think the product is defective.

    16. The same problem in my TX1000 This’s big shit

    17. Greg Johnson in San Jose, CA says:

I have the HP Pavilion tx2000 and it has overheated since the day I bought it but never acted up until about the last 6 to 9 months when the heat appearantly ruined the internal wireless card. I feel this product was defective out of the gate and should have returned it when bought. I have played around with the power setting and display settings to try and reduce the load on the CPU and GPU. To no avail, the damn thing runs HOT HOT HOT. This is NOT what I paid for. I paid for a quality device that is properly engineered for NORMAL daily use without the risk of being physically burned when the laptop is on my lap. I am very diappointed with HP and feel they need to recall the product immediately! It overheated when it ran XP, Vista, and now Windows 7. Although, I find Windows 7 to run a little coolor but just barely.

    18. Jeanna Marcussen says:

I have a tx1219us model, and all of a sudden it just shut off, so I tried to turn it back on and all of the lights light up for literally a second, and then it shuts off and never reboots. HP knows there is a defect, the DV models have the same motherboard as the TX models, and they recalled the DV models….so why won’t they recall the TX models…I will never own another HP product again and I am telling everyone else that HP is not worth the money or hassle!!

    19. Specifically, the issue is caused by a defective NVIDIA graphics processing unit (GPU). The casings for the chips are insufficient to handle the heat created during normal functioning, thereby overheating not only the GPU but surrounding components, including the wireless adapter and the motherboard.

This GPU was shipped with a large quantity of HP, Dell and Apple notebooks. NVIDIA, HP, Dell and Apple have all acknowledged the problem to some extent. NVIDIA was even forced to settle a lawsuit, albeit for far, far less than the actual damages and they have never issued a formal recall.

Due to the NVIDIA GPU defect, HP currently offers free repair for up to 24 months after purchase on certain notebook models. However, that does not include the tx1000 or tx2000 series. I suggest all affected consumers email the CEO at the link criosdean provided and ask that he include the tx models in that offer.

I have heard that direct contact has occasionally resulted in offers for free repair, so it may be worth it to include your contact information.

Best of luck in getting your notebooks repaired. Fortunately, I purchased a two-year protection plan from the retailer.

    20. Problems with TX1220 and TX 1415 (a non touch screen model) included overheating and eventual crash (both a month out of warranty). HP did replace motherboards in both machines but the TX 1220 continues to overheat and the TX 1415 has died again and cannot be booted. Additionally, the TX1220 hinge has failed (even though it has been used minimally (due to problems), rarely used the tablet feature and has been treated with respect and care. The only solution seems to be to replace the hinge (it cannot be tightened). This is a tablet and the hinge should be expected to perform (I cannot help but wonder if during the HP repairs the hinge came loose).

Finally, I also experienced problems with dropped Wi-Fi drivers (not Bluetooth), and a blank screen.

I have two old HP laptops that still run fine (one is 5 years old the other in 7 years old). I still believe that HP makes a quality product but it is time for them to admit they made a lemon.

Consumers should consider making a complaint with their state attorney general (I don’t think the Better Business Bureau would be useful). Another tool may be to contact a local news station about a “Shame on You” type story. Finally, I wonder if there is a products liability or class action lawyer who might consider filing a suit.

      Just a few thoughts.

I am having the exact same problems, i had the wireless card replaced and that solved the problem, but the laptop would lose signal and would have to be turn off and turned back on. The thing started getting very very hot and will now not even turn on, and if on the occasional time that it does turn on, all i get is a blank screen. I cannot believe that HP has done nothing to remedy this and if they do not, I will encourage everyone i know to not purchase any of their products in the future.

I purchased a used HP TX1320 and afterwards found out that the wireless (WLAN) was not working. The Bluetooth appears to be but not the Wireless. From what I’ve found out, I am loosing respect for HP and hope they recall and resolve this problem ASAP.

Does anyone know for sure if new or refurbished motherboards correct the problem?

    24. Loren Aston says:

It is an outrage that HP is ignoring us. I started having problems with my TX1000 around 10 months. The screen would go black and mute and wifi buttons amber just like everyone else. I could get it going again but only with a hard restart (which I hate to do if I can avoid it.) It seems like this happened to me every week on average until yesterday, after only having the computer a little over 2 years the screen went black and is dead. A $1200 laptop should last longer than 2 years!!

    25. tx1320US wireless failure last week. No drivers to be found. Tried a nunber of actions, reload drivers, reload bios. Got it to work again by going into bios, returning to default setting. Worked until 3 reboot. Will try again tomorrow after all my backups done. If it fails new express port wireless card

    26. Michael A. Cook says:

Several issues with this system. Batteries died very early, even though laptop was mainly plugged into an outlet. The laptop runs very hot and sometimes shuts itself down when it starts to overheat. Start up an application and the laptop goes to lunch with black screen and nothing for about 30 plus seconds. Wireless went out and after several days working with HP tech support, they finally had me send the unit to them and they ended up replacing the motherboard. Definately not impressed with HP’s tablet PC……

    27. Is there a current class action lawsuit against them?

    28. New problem witht he tx 1320 Yes, I have had these exact problems, and have been using my “Laptop” as a desktop for about 8 months. No wlan. Now the pointing device is going out. I haven’t researched this, and don’t know exactly what is happening, but basically you point, click and nothing happens. I did reload the operationg system, but it did not fix the problem. A funny thing is that if I do control/alt/delete bring up the monitor, it starts to work again and will work for maybe one click, or maybe for an hour?? My opinion is that there will have to be a lawsuit to get this problem admitted and those of us who are trying to do our work or whatever on these terrible machines, compensated.
